After the PR failures of Google Glass, companies involved in augmented reality technologies want to steer clear of making something stick out on your face the way Glass tended to do. The obvious way to go about this is to shrink the tech, making it imperceptible to the human eye. You can do this by seamlessly attaching it to a pair of glasses, for instance. You can also go the other route, however. Make it as big as possible, thus turning it into a helmet. They’ll just think you are a rambunctious biker instead of an AR-equipped superhero, right? To that end, here is the Seer AR-based mega-helmet thingamajig.
Seer, which is a pretty cool and apt name, promises to turn you into a real-life Iron Man, albeit without all of that drinking and womanizing (up to you.) It gives you a full field of view at all times, which is something smaller units could not hope to claim. It uses reflective mirror technology, similar to what pilot helmets use, to bring about this full immersion. The results are something similar to what Glass offers, only on a much bigger scale. They also say Seer can be switched to a VR mode with just the flick of a button. Hefty claims, folks!
Seer isn’t out yet, after all Avengers: Age of Ultron doesn’t release until this summer. So if you want to be Iron Man at some point in the future you are going to have to jettison on down to their Kickstarter page and plunk down a few Stark bucks. You can pre-order your own for around $100, which isn’t too bad considering Glass’s hefty price tag for Explorers.
